President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Secretary of State Rice, Given the present crisis with Iran, NATO can serve as a model for U.S. policy in dealing with the imminent threat. With the recent announcement that Iran is installing 6,000 more nuclear centrifuges that produce enriched uranium (in addition to the 3,000 already functioning), it is time for a strong U.S. response. U.N. Security Council sanctions are utterly weak leaving no further recourse. Nuclear-capable ballistic missiles are the next step and these will deeply destabilize the Middle East, threatening moderate Arabs and Israelis. Preemption seems out of the question and the only option to deter the mullahs of Iran from nuclear aggression is action based on the Cold War model of NATO, in which deterrence prevented the Soviets from engaging in nuclear aggression until there was a regime change in Russia. NATO was formed to provide a collective defense. An attack on any member of the NATO alliance was treated as though it was an attack on all of the other members and would be acted on accordingly by the United States and it's allies. The mullahs, now in power in Iran, make strong American leadership an immediate necessity. In this case, an attack on Israel would be considered an attack on the United States sufficient to make Iran think twice about attacking Israel. As Charles Krauthammer has suggested, a declaration would read: "It should be the policy of this nation to regard any nuclear attack upon Israel by Iran, or originating in Iran, as an attack by Iran on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon Iran." This should be followed with a simple explanation, "As a beacon of tolerance and as leader of the free world, the United States will not permit a second Holocaust to be perpetrated upon the Jewish people." The threat by Iran to commit a new genocide cannot be met with silence. Signed
