For those who have been following the controversy of Hillel hosting the anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian group, J Street, at Pennsylvania University, and would like to express their thoughts, we provide a sample letter for you to send to Hillel leadership directly.

Dear Hillel Leaders, Permitting J Street to use the University of Pennsylvania Hillel`s Steinhardt Hall for its nationally broadcast Kick Start Grassroots Initiative event, on February 4th, is both wrong and irresponsible. Your argument, that "J Street has a right to be heard" is most assuredly correct. But Hillel is not required to be the vehicle for J Street`s national campaign; there are numerous other venues available to them. Arguably, you will have to grant the same right "to exercise constitutional rights" to the JDL, as well as to other organizations that are controversial, including the KKK, etc. Your right to free association allows you to invite or not invite whomever you choose. Their right to free speech does not require a private organization, such as Hillel, to be the means through which J Street, or any other organization, redeems its rights. If J Street wants to publicize their agenda, transparently misrepresented as pro-Israel activism, they can and should just find their own venue. Hillel`s agreement to host J Street lends legitimacy and respectability to this controversial organization (referred to by the Israeli government as "a unique problem"), while also raising many troubling questions. It is clear why J Street wants to penetrate the campuses, the Jewish student community, and why it wants the Hillel stamp of approval in its effort to attract and mobilize impressionable young students. You do a great disservice to your local Hillel, to National Hillel, to your student constituency, to Israel and to the Jewish people when you allow Hillel facilities to be used as a soapbox for an institution with questionable credentials on an issue as central to the Hillel mission as support for Israel. There is still time for you to rectify your mistake and cancel this event at Hillel. J Street can use other facilities. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,
