Campaign Opposing the Quartet’s Road Map

Esther Levens – Apr 10, 2003
National Unity Coalition for Israel

We have laid the groundwork in preparation for a concentrated campaign to combat the Road Map. Arutz-7 states that a delegation is now in the US from Israel holding high level talks with the administration (see below). We must begin now to counter the intense pressure on Israel by the Quartet. After fighting the Iraqi War to get rid of Saddam Hussein we do not want to resurrect his clone in Israel.

Here are some of the activities being sponsored by The National Unity Coalition as part of our Save Israel Campaign in opposition to the Road Map:

  • Press conference panel at the NRB in January in Nashville.
We had leaders of major Christian organizations in this conference – all addressing their speeches opposing the Road Map to Raanan Gissin, spokesman for PM Sharon. We have been invited back to have a repeat press conference for the 3rd time next year at the Charlotte Conference.

  • A specially prepared site saveisraelcampaign.com has been created.
We have widely distributed more than 50 articles over the last few of months opposing the Road Map. These are featured in www.saveisraelcampaign.com, a sub-site of our web site www.israelunitycoalition.com. This new sub-site is designed specifically to generate broad-based opposition to the Road Map.
  • A VIRTUAL MARCH TO THE WHITE HOUSE VIA THE INTERNET.
Mass responses to our Action Alerts are generated WITHIN A ONE-CLICK EMAIL SYSTEM that is coordinated with our web site. Respondents to our Action Alerts type their zip code and use our sample letters or write their own. Their message is sent directly to their Member of the House of Representatives, to their two Senators, to President Bush, to Prime Minister Sharon, their Cabinet members and to Leaders of the House, the Senate and Knesset. This campaign MUST BEGIN NOW!
  • Activating our Washington, DC office.
Our Washington office is key to our overall plan with regular meetings to be held in Washington. Shari Dollinger will come on board as National Director on June 1. Esther Levens will remain CEO. Shari has been the Inter-religious Affairs officer for the Embassy of Israel for the past two years.
  • Publicizing our campaign at major events.
    • Prayer and Solidarity Breakfast at the Embassy of Israel, Washington DC on May 2.
    • Important Meeting in Washington DC, May 17-18, co-sponsored with Zionist House.
    • National Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem, New York – May 29-30.
  • Campus Project with oversight of Hasbara Fellowships
We are on more than 70 campuses, working closely with Hillel and large Christian groups.
  • On-line Advocacy Manual
We have developed a comprehensive Advocacy Manual that will be posted on our web site later this week. It covers the entire history of the Arab/Israel conflict with 40 chapters and 48 well-known authors.
  • Islam Curricula
We have 2 separate Islam curricula, one for high school level and one for college level.

Our main thrust remains informing and uniting our huge network of grassroots organizations, churches, synagogues, prayer and study groups. We have leaders and writers in place who reach a strong pro-Israel core of activists. But we need to build on that. We must work in concert; and all groups should be encouraged to join with us. We will be more effective by working together “on the same page.”

We welcome any and all ideas. Please don’t hesitate to send any suggestions you may have for us –or tell us how we can be of help to you.

Please make it a priority to keep in touch with us and forward our Action Alerts to your network. Our message must reach the Administration beginning now – and must be repeated often.

The Quartet’s Plan:

  • Provisional sovereign Palestinian statehood in 2003. President Bush, June 2002
  • Permanent sovereign Palestinian statehood status in 2005. President Bush, June 2002
  • No discussion or negotiation. C. Rice & C. Powell, AIPAC policy conference, April, 2003

What will really happen:

  • All of the Holy Sites precious to both Jews and Christians will come under Muslim control and authority. Earl Cox, Front Page Jerusalem
  • The Quartet will award statehood to the Palestinians before President Bush’s conditions in his speech of Sept. 24, 2002 have been met. ZOA
  • The Road Map is anchored in the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) who supports terrorism and denies the Holocaust. ZOA
  • The Road Map targets Israeli “settlements” but makes no mention of Arab settlements. ZOA
  • The “legalized” creation of a Palestinian army as “security services”. ZOA
  • Responsibility for Israel’s security needs will be assigned to the Quartet. ZOA
  • The Road Map will undermine America’s war against terrorism. ZOA
  • The creation of a Palestinian state will provide a safe haven for radical Islamic Jihad terrorists to live and to train others. National Unity Coalition for Israel

As soon as the details of the Road Map are made public, we will distribute them.

ON THE ROADMAP

Arutz-7

Wednesday April 9th 2003

“If Israel’s comments on the Road Map plan are not accepted, the chance of implementing the plan will be very small.” So says Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom. Representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Defense Ministry are in Washington this week, discussing the changes Israel would like to introduce with American Administration officials. Israel has proposed 15 amendments for the plan, many of them dealing with security issues. Israel’s basic demand is that the Palestinian Authority disband and demilitarize all the terrorist groups before any other steps are implemented.

The Road Map plan as originally formulated calls for the formation of a Palestinian state in two stages, beginning with non-permanent borders this very year. The plan also demands that Israel provide economic help to the PA, reduce restrictions on Arab travel despite the ever-present threat of terrorism, destroy hilltop communities in Yesha (Judea, Samaria and Gaza), and freeze construction for the 250,000 residents of Yesha.

Though Israel’s government has never accepted the notion of a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has often stated his personal support for such an entity. He has qualified his stand, however, with an insistence that the PA state be demilitarized and that Israel control its borders and airspace. This does not appear to be the American position, however.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer of Germany said today that the states of the European Union have accepted the US-designed Road Map and will be acting soon to see that it is implemented. He made the comments after a meeting today with Abu ‘Alaa, the chairman of the PA Legislative Council. Fischer also met with PLO leader Yasser Arafat today, in Ramallah.

At least one PA organization has said it will not accept the Road Map plan. Fatah’s Al-Aksa Brigades terrorist organization warned the PA leadership today that its acceptance of the plan will lead to a civil war within the Authority. It also announced today that Iraq and the PA stand together in a mutual war against the “the American Zionist conqueror.”
