Settler leaders will stage a sit-down protest in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s home later this month to protest a planned freeze of construction in West Bank settlements.
The settlers plan to hold the demonstration before Netanyahu heads to New York for a United Nations General Assembly meeting, during which he will apparently meet with U.S. President Barack Obama.
Obama has exerted tremendous pressure on the prime minister to agree to a settlement freeze, which the Palestinians say is a precondition to a renewal of peace talks.
The heads of West Bank settlements decided on the protest at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday to discuss steps against the planned freeze. They also agreed to apply more pressure on ministers and Likud lawmakers to oppose the move.
“This isn`t a settlement freeze but a noose on settlement. We will work in every way to continue settlement; when everything is forbidden, everything is permitted. As the Bedouin in the Negev say, `What we can do – they won?t letbuild legally,`” said Herzl Bar-Ari, head of the Karnei Shomron regional council.
He added: “There won`t be any more industrial quiet, and we will take practical steps.”
