Following undergraduate studies in 1953, Elwood began ministering in churches in Virginia. Over the next 24 years, he served in three churches and founded a successful Christian educational institution. His final 15 years of pastoral ministry were in Lynchburg, where his congregation numbered more than 1000 members.
Elwood left the pastoral ministry in 1977 to join The Friends of Israel. He later joined the staff of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, as a national conference speaker and Editor-at-Large for Moody magazine.
Writing is a major part of his work. Currently published books include Zvi; Zvi and the Next Generation; It Is No Dream; Come, Walk With Me; Not to the Strong; The Outpouring; The Zion Connection; There is Hope; ZVI: The Miraculous Story of Triumph Over the Holocaust; and II Peter: Standing Fast in The Last Days. His books have been translated into several languages.
In July 1989, Elwood became the Executive Director of The Friends of Israel. In addition to general oversight of the work, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Israel My Glory magazine, which has a circulation of 200,000 and subscribers in 129 countries. He also hosts Friends of Israel's daily and weekly radio programs, which air over more than 300 outlets in the United States and include two foreign broadcasts heard in more than 40 countries. Elwood is also heard over Jerusalem Post Radio, which is a weekly Internet program. In May 2001, he stepped down as the Executive Director but continues as Editor-in-Chief and Director of Media.
Elwood first traveled to the Middle East in the early 1970's. Since then, he has researched and written extensively on Israel and on God's prophetic program for the nation and the Jewish people. In this connection, he has spoken at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., and is involved with national leaders in Israel and the United States on matters related to the current peace process. He has on five occasions been a keynote speaker for the National Christian Prayer Breakfast in Honor of Israel. In recent years Elwood has been active in providing conservative analysis and commentary on the nature of the issues between radical Islam, Israel, and the Western world.
